Wozniacki triumphs at Indian Wells

The Danish world number one recovered from the surprise loss of the second set to end a marathon baseline slugfest in two hours eight minutes at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Wozniacki, beaten by Serb Jelena Jankovic in last year's final here, broke the 15th-seeded Frenchwoman three times in the final set, sealing victory when her opponent sent a backhand long.
On a cool overcast day in the California desert, the Dane threw both arms skywards to celebrate her second title of the year, having also triumphed at last month's Dubai championships.
"Marion, you had an amazing tournament this week," a jubilant Wozniacki said courtside. "I am sorry I had to beat you in the final but it's not like football where there is a draw."
Bartoli, who had booked her place in the final by crushing Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-1 6-3 in the last four, choked back tears as she applauded the triumphant Dane.
"Sorry I am a bit in tears but I guess it is more tears of tiredness," the 26-year-old said. "Caroline, you make me cry today. I would like to congratulate her. You can be proud of yourself.
"I know your big goal is to get a grand slam and I am sure you will get it very soon."

The year of the Djoker continues

Djokovic improved to 18-0, including victories at the Australian Open and in Dubai last month. He will move into the No. 2 spot when the ATP Tour rankings are released Monday, having bumped Roger Federer down to third after he lost to Djokovic in the semifinals. Nadal will remain No. 1 with a 14-3 record.
Djokovic became just the third player to beat Nadal and Federer in the same tournament twice, having last done it at Montreal in 2007. That year, Djokovic lost to Nadal in the final here, then won in 2008.
Nadal had beaten Djokovic in all five of their previous finals meetings, and he broke him twice to win the first set.
Djokovic broke to lead 5-3 in the second set, then survived a five-deuce game on his serve to take the set, winning when Nadal's backhand went wide.
He broke an error-prone Nadal twice in the first three games of the third set to take a 4-0 lead. Djokovic served out the match at 40-love to keep Nadal without a title since October.

Serena makes plans for July return

The nine-team US league, which will stage a 36th season from July 4-24, announced on Thursday that Williams is scheduled to play in Washington on July 7 against the Boston Lobsters and when the Kastles visit Sacramento on July 9.

The reigning Wimbledon champion had said after her surgery for a blood clot that travelled from a leg into her lungs that she was hopeful of a summer return, but was unsure exactly when she might be back on the court.

The former world number one, a 13-time Grand Slam champion, would need to be ready by June 20 to defend her Wimbledon title. The women's final is set for July 2.

Williams has not played a top-level match since last year's Wimbledon final after cutting her right foot on broken glass at a restaurant last July.

Harrison beats Raonic; Roddick downs Isner @ BNP

Ryan Harrison defeated Canadian Milos Raonic 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 in a pairing of wild cards. The 18-year-old American earned a matchup with Federer in the fourth round.
18-year-old Ryan Harrison, the wild card who had the pro-American crowd on its feet as he took out Canadian phenom Milos Raonic in a 2-1/2 hour 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 victory during the late afternoon.

“He's played a lot of matches where he's just looked at the guy that serves huge and plays big and doesn't really have much to lose right now,” Harrison said of Raonic.

“The fact that I have been beaten him a couple times [in juniors] and the fact that we're somewhat similar in age and I'm younger than him also helped me a little bit. The pair combined for 28 aces - 17 by Raonic, but Harrison's pluck in the first-round tie-break and his superior service down the stretch sent the world's No. 152 player into a showdown with none other than Roger Federer Wednesday.

Federer battled with Novak Djokovic for top honors in the "blink and you missed it" match of the day. Federer needed just 58 minutes to rush Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-0, 6-2, breaking his opponent five times and seldom missing on first serves.
